"[Chicuelo's] performance is assured throughout, whether his guitar is to the fore, playing fast, crisp-sounding scales on 'Cuatro Costaos' or duetting, deftly, with Carlos Sarduy's bugle and trumpet on the Afro-Cuban influenced, jazz-tinged 'La Caraba'. Skipping across the palos - through tangos, guajiras, rumbas, sevillanas and tanguillos - Chicuelo and his formidable army of collaborators never miss a beat ... Chicuelo delights in experimenting with flamenco, performing a bulerias mashed up with a Venezuelan waltz, dropping the traditional rasgueado (rhythmic strumming), or paying homage, as on 'Canalla', to a Ramón Montoya rondeña without ever actually quoting it ... Traditionalists beware; this is one of the world's finest flamenco guitarists discovering new forms and creating space for fresh fusions".
