"This is a cracking release from Simon Rattle and the LSO. Wonderful Town is, if I may borrow and adapt words from the earlier Bernstein/Comden/Green collaboration, a helluva show about a helluva town. And it gets a helluva performance here ... Overall this new recording has the edge. It's a significant centenary tribute to Lenny".

"Recording of the week: The standout performer is Alysha Umphress as Ruth: she brings oodles of no-nonsense sassiness to arguably the show's best-known number, One Hundred Easy Ways to Lose a Man ... There's no doubting the quality that the LSO brings to the performance either, including a gleefully cheeky ensemble of saxophones, a string section sparkling with Broadway pizzazz, and trumpets who in the Ballet at the Village Vortex display some of the most satisfyingly filthy vibrato that I can recall hearing".

"The LSO's new recording of Wonderful Town is downright glorious. Conducted by Simon Rattle and featuring Danielle de Niese and Alysha Umphress in the lead roles ... Bernstein's Tony award-winning musical remains a classic. The colourful, jazz-infused score evokes a lively and quixotic city that never sleeps. It is of course pure Bernstein; the tunes are oh-so memorable and the performances are wide-eyed and big-hearted, which is just as it should be".

"This repertoire is anyway not natural territory for Rattle. For anyone steeped in its flair and flavour, the style doesn't feel in-bred. It's the earnestness that doesn't ring true, the way in which what should come naturally simply sounds overworked ... I can see why Danielle de Niese was cast ... She's a natural stage animal and a big personality whatever the repertoire. But Eileen Sherwood isn't a big personality and there's something wrong with the balance of the casting ... Worst of all, though, is the deployment of the entire LSO Chorus".
