"Perhaps the only fault of this album is the concluding song "My Heart," which listens as an almost half-baked musical poem featuring only bass and minimal guitar. It's an odd choice to end on and seems somewhat rushed. Still, Ex:Re's debut as a whole is on par with artists like Angel Olsen and Florence and The Machine, and will leave its listeners hungry for more from the young English artist".

"While Daughter began as the solo project of singer/guitarist Elena Tonra, following two proper studio albums and a video game soundtrack with her band, she emerged in 2018 with the eponymous Ex:Re, her solo recording debut. Although Daughter is known for its elegant, brooding ruminations, some of Ex:Re's productions are even sparerr, as evidenced by the album's first track, "Where the Time Went." It consists of only Tonra's hushed, brittle vocals, a repeated monophonic guitar line, and occasional gossamer touches of cello, hand drums, or additional electric guitar".

"Daughter fans looking for more of their panoramic leanings will be let down, but for everybody else this is a beautifully understated mood piece and Tonra's finest work to date, with or without the band".
