Ghosts

"A haunting, ethereal collection. Full of delightful surprises, it's an album that marks something of a progression in Rani's career arc ... With its host of carefully chosen collaborators, 'Ghosts' is a special album. It perfectly showcases Rani's burgeoning songwriting talents as well as her outstanding musicianship. Plus, of course, there is the delightful surprise of that singing voice. Hania Rani concedes that whilst most of the songs may talk about love, her thoughts are "about having to face some kind of end". However, I'm not so sure. To me, these Ghosts feel much more like a beginning".

"Hania Rani's latest is a sustained leap on from the Nils Frahm-like piano movements of her past. With synths to the fore, guests such as Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson and Icelandic loop builder Ólafur Arnalds cast complementary spells on the hushed, hymnal "Dancing With Ghosts" and the ethereally edged "Whispering House", Rani's ever-mutable voice a delicate yet forthright meld of Kate Bush and Stina Nordenstam. Elsewhere, slowly unfolding, swelling instrumentals "The Boat" and "Komeda" come with a cineaste's sensibility, jazzy undertows and an overt love of mid-'70s Pink Floyd. Even the title feels appropriate, Rani ghosting through musical worlds on an album of subtle contrasts and seamless juxtapositions".
