"While it is great to finally have a DVD of this great opera, it has one nearly fatal flaw. For inexplicable reasons, considering that L'amico Fritz is hardly a lengthy opera, the second half of the famous “Cherry Duet” is completely cut ... Otherwise this is an excellent production, with tasteful, traditional sets that serve the music and singers [instead of the other way around] and some very good singers who have a decided flair for the material".

"Rosetta Cucchi abandons Alsace for a slice of American apple pie in her production of Mascagni's successor to 'Cavaleria Rusticana' ... Verdi though the libretto 'the worst he'd ever seen', so perhaps we should be grateful that Fritz and Suzel's love story has abandoned Europe ... What remains is the music, and in particular Mascagni's ear for a good tune, relished by Riccardo Frizzi in the pit ... Charles Castronovo is an admiarble Fritz ... Salome Jicia's Suzel is at her best vocally when she and Fritz declare their love".

"Editor's choice: If you are deterred by the prospect of 90 minutes of saccharine charm, rest assured that Mascagni's gift for melody, orchestration and the delineation of character will leave you satisfied. It is a feel-good opera ... Cucchi evokes a lively society, never overstated, of friendship and good cheer ... Salome Jicia strikes just the right note as Suzel ... Charles Castronovo makes an admirabl lyrical Fritz ... There's succulent support from the orchestra ... Ricccardo Frizza controls the ebb and flow in masterly fashion. The whole thing is very nicely done".
