"Karlheinz Stockhausen's Mantra for two pianos and electronics is recognized as one of his major keyboard works and an example of his increasingly liberal use of serial methods ... The performance by pianists Xenia Pestova and Pascal Meyer, with former Stockhausen assistant Jan Panis providing the electronics, was supervised by the composer, and the use of digital sound production brings the music up to date for the 21st century".

"Mantra is also one of the most immediate and lucid of Stockhausen's works; it's a showpiece for the two pianists' virtuosity, and for their comedic skills, too, in the few moments of rather heavy-handed humour. There's an immediacy about the way in which this performance by Mark Knoop and Roderick Chadwick, with Newton Armstrong controlling the electronics, has been recorded; every nuance and colour in Stockhausen's piano writing is caught, and the work's coda ... becomes an overwhelming climax".

"An homage to Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928 - 2007), pioneer of electroacoustic music, who described the genesis of his work, 'Mantra', accordingly: "I was sitting next to the driver, and I just let my imagination completely loose... I was humming to myself... I heard this melody - it all came very quickly together ... Created in 1970, 'Mantra' is composed for an ensemble of two pianos, wood block, antique cymbals and a ring modulator - reproduced today by synthesized electronics. - 'Mantra' is an emblematic work of its time, a founding moment of the psychedelic explosion of the 1970s".

"Petova and Meyer's attack and dynamic range don't touch at the same extremes as Cover/Grotenhuis; and certainly not of the Kontarsky brother's premiere recording".

"Each listener will find their own way into his world, but the key in the lock for many has been 'Mantra' ... One factor must be the work's relatively modest performing demands for two pianos and ring-modulating systems ... The GrauSchumacher duo have recorded 'Mantra' before, for Wergo, and headphone listening brings out the more sophistcated synthesis of instrumental and electronic elements on this new version ... I would still point Stockhausen initiates towards Gruppen and Stimmung first. Taken on its own terms, however, this Mantra redux deserves definitive status".

Grossartig!".

"A modern version that is a real contender ... Here the opening woodblock crack, with its accompanying brouhaha of piano turbulence hits you between the eyes. Right from the get-go, the performance has a confidence that feels right and proper ... The playing cuts through with knockout physicality; the sense that you are being shown multiple sides of an object that is perpetually evolving, spinning in and out of control, is secure".
