"This is an attractive collection of Beethoven's wind music, all from early in his career despite the high opus numbers on two of the works ... The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), as is their normal practice for music of this era, employs natural (valveless) horns but modern woodwinds ... The SCO musicians perform splendidly, seeming to really enjoy what they are doing, and the sound is state of the art ... In every way these are exemplary performances in clear, close, but warm sound of some of Beethoven's lighter music, which warrant an enthusiastic recommendation from me".

"Their previous disc of Mozart's wind divertimenti was a real delight ... That's both a blessing and a curse, though, the curse being that this one suffers a little by the comparison. Not because of the playing, which is wonderful throughout, nor because of the disc's presentation, which is lavish even by Linn's very high standards; but because of the repertoire. It all dates from early in Beethoven's career ... But don't let my grumpiness put you off. If you want to explore some of these lesser known corners of Beethoven's output then you couldn't hope for more masterful, affable guides".

"One wouldn't normally expect late-18th-century aristocratic entertainment music to survive the test of time, but this really does speak across the ages ... The horn writing is especially ear-catching: at times almost frenetically exuberant, it's played superbly here by the two SCO horns ... But all the solo playing here is impressive, as is the tight, beautifully balanced ensemble, and the recording does it justice".

"The Sextet ... a lively and light-hearted piece of Harmoniemusik, and the SCO wind band play it crisply, finding a happy balance between bucolic vigour and expressive delicacy .. I find the musicians' exuberance irresistible. Listen to the way they swagger and swing through the Minuet, for instance ... Marvellously done here - fluent, articulate and sensitively shaped".
