"More ambitious than anything they've attempted before ... The album may jar some listeners initially, but spending a little time with it will remedy that. San Patricio, more than merely satisfying Moloney's obsession, raises more questions about what stories lay hidden under the floorboards of history than it answers, thank goodness. Music this beautifully articulated allows cultures to talk to one another across time, space, language, and other divides".

"The music blends Irish uilleann pipes, whistle and fiddles with Mexican guitars, banjo and trumpets, and the cast of singers ranges from Lila Downs and Linda Ronstadt to the extraordinary, passionate 90-year-old ranchero star, Chavela Vargas. Then there's moody guitar instrumental work and a fine, sturdy ballad (in English) from Cooder. Grammy nominations are a certainty".

"Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains has long loved "the lost trails of history," as he put it, as has Ry Cooder, and this project brings them together in a glorious union which weds traditional Irish and Mexican folk music with an effortlessly timeless charm that's as informed as it is inspired ... This is music of sorrow and celebration mingled, of triumph and tragedy, which makes new musical connections in the world, not unlike new synapses in the brain, that can never be undone ... Stunning, and not to be missed".

"In equal measure a curio, a lament, a history lesson and a hoedown, San Patricio is one of those albums that happily transcends its parts. If you only buy one Irish-Mexican album this year, in fact, The Chieftains and Ry Cooder should do you nicely ... At an hour, though, the Irish-Mexican theme could frankly do with more storytelling; Liam Neeson's effective but brief reading, March to Battle, is no substitute for the sort of explanation Cooder superbly wove into his earlier Chavez Ravine. Still, this is a transatlantic musical campaign whose virtuosity, verve and sheer eccentric heart make it hard to resist".

"San Patricio will surely prove the most persuasive project Paddy Moloney has pursued since Santiago. A host of vibrant Mexican musicians from Lila Downs to Los Camperos Del Valle join The Chieftains and other long-term collaborators Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt and Carlos Nuñez pursuing Irish-Mexican connections".
