"Voice of Ages is a good Chieftains recording; its solid performances easily outweigh its duds, but it feels like something less than a 50th anniversary celebration".

"It's that uniquely distinctive Chieftains sound - mellifluous one moment, rip-roaring the next - that's the heart of the album, even with virtuoso musicians like the Punch Brothers and Galician piper Carlos Núñez on board. The group's previous album, the Mexican-themed San Patricio, is more challenging and rewarding; but as a tastefully populist exercise this set represents a job well done".

"Bon Iver's Down In The Willow Garden has a fragile charm, The Low Anthem's poignant take on Ewan MacColl's School Days Over is quietly affecting and the Civil Wars' Lily Love is nice enough; but the most interesting tracks are those when the guest artists are less tentative, showing us their style rather than trying to fit around the Chieftains - the Punch Brothers' The Lark In The Clear Air, Carolina Chocolate Drops' Pretty Little Girl and Imelda May's Carolina Rua. Mostly, though, they almost seem superfluous as the Chieftains do what they've been doing for 50 years with distinctive, practised ease. That it still sounds sublime counts for plenty, of course, and it would be cruel to dismiss this album as marketing opportunism, however tempting".
