I 1997 udgav Deftones albummet "Around the fur", der fik massiv omtale og spilletid verden over og blev kåret som årets heavy-album af blandt andre MTV, primært pga. hittet "My own summer (shove it!)". Meget vand er der løbet i åen siden dengang og Deftones er da også flydt med: Hvor "Around the fur" mere var i stil med den rene metal-rap (jfr. fx. Korn), lyder de denne gang mere inspireret af afdæmpet Radiohead eller industrielle Nine Inch Nails. En plade med ambitioner - og stribevis af MTV-hits.

"It is certainly true that White Pony needed no augmentation. In its original incarnation it sounds as breathtaking and innovative now as it did in June 2000. To weigh Black Stallion against it would not only be unfair, but also miss the point. What we have here is a whole new set of parallel hoof prints to marvel at".
