"The only problem is Taha himself, who insists on declaiming rather than singing on several tracks, including Zoom sur Oum, which is remarkable for the use of samples from the legendary Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Taha is in better form with the North African treatment of Elvis's Now or Never, the Algerian-cajun-rockabilly of Fakir, and - best of all - a new treatment of his 1993 anti-racism anthem Voilà Voilà, now featuring Brian Eno".

"After a sorry adventure into synth-led Euro-pop, Algeria's rebel rocker relocates his mojo for this ninth solo album of his 30-year career. In part it's a nod to his roots; there's a tribute to Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum (with vocal samples) and a homage to Elvis Presley with Now Or Never".

""Zoom" has just enough to keep you interested and where it's good, it's really good, combining as it does Justin Adams' subtle mastery of production with Taha's song writing, voice and diverse influences. All too often, though, Taha strays from this great recipe in search of what feels like some kind of image, a desire to be and remain the king of Rock 'n' Rai - a latter-day Elvis".
