"For det sidste årtis allerstørste og mest innoverende indie-popband er Being Funny in a Foreign Language et kedeligt tegn på stagnation ... den impulsløse Being Funny in a Foreign Language [er] langt hen ad vejen en yderst grå masse af standardiseret og i sidste ende åndsforladt samlebåndspop ...

"This wouldn't be a 1975 album if it didn't feature Healy tripping himself up. Thankfully, five albums in, a lot of the obstacles that aided his descent have been cleared away. Streamlined, focused on heart and not just head, and loaded with big, unironic pop moments - the intro to the major key Oh Caroline is pure Backstreet Boys - this is their first album in too long to play out like a pleasure and not a chore".

"Matty Healy taps Jack Antonoff to help produce a concise, meaningful, pop-focused album about love. It's cliché, it's obvious, it's slyly profound - it's the 1975".

"'Being Funny in a Foreign Language' er næppe det magnum opus, som bandet vil blive husket for. Men albummet tjener ikke desto mindre til at understrege, at The 1975 selv uden Healys store armbevægelser stadig er et fremragende band ... 11 smaskforelskede popsange uden så meget fikumdik: 'Being Funny in a Foreign Language' er The 1975's hidtil korteste og mest stringente album".

"After a phase of experimentation, the band's fifth album is succinct, cuttingly self-aware, and boasts some of their most-direct pop hits in years".
