"Beware the Fetish lacks some of the overstated grit and blown-out feel of other Congotronics releases, but by no means suffers from this distinction. Instead of just relying on hyper-saturated sounds and colors, the lengthy statements here strive for something deeper and less immediately understandable. The album rolls along with a meditative, confident feeling, morphing into a bright dream-like celebration in its many various peaks".

"There are some extraordinary moments, from the unaccompanied chanting and likembe workout on Thus Spoke the Ancestors to the suitably spooky and edgy title track. Several of the musicians took part in the Congotronics vs Rockers project three years ago, along with members of Konono No 1, their producer Vincent Kenis and singer Juana Molina, and the final track is a suitably frantic reminder of that tour. Play it very loud".

"Their first album (...) twinned home-made science-fiction electronica with likembe thumb piano, powerful rhythms and the most beautiful choral and guitar effects. Sheets of magic sound, somewhat less raucous and at-your-throat than stablemates Konono No 1, drew us into a tingling forest echoing with static ... This new album, six years later, fifth in the Congotronics series, packs even more of a wallop than its predecessor ... If ever music was designed to hit multiple pleasure centres at once, this is it: the sheer cleverness of it all, the way the body blows match the beauty of the guitar, the dance and the trance, the unashamed repetitions, the scratchy bumblebee-trapped-in-a-bottle thing, the relentless conversation and declamation of the voices. And, crucially, the faithfulness to traditional time-tested forms. This is strange music that knows exactly what it's up to ... Got to love it".
