"In 2002 Solomon Burke rejuvenated classic soul with 'Don't Give Up On Me' ... The brief was simple: put Burke in a studio (...) with an intuitive producer - Joe Henry - and a small ensemble and get him to sing like he was back in church. Henry's actual instruction to Burke was "sing your ass off". Burke wasn't used to working live anymore and there was much procrastination. But with a set of songs written by big-named fans - Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, Brian Wilson - to grab the headlines and add weight, Burke got down to it and over four days made a masterpiece, his raw, expressive testifying hands down some of his best. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album and kickstarted a soul rebirth".
