"Even though Gathered is very much a creative patchwork, it coheres thematically as well as musically, and sounds both sly and sincere. Howe Gelb's evolution from the most distinctive roots rocker in the desert to Arizona's most unlikely lounge singer is coming along nicely, and Gathered is a welcome addition to his catalog".

"Gathered is very much an album that needs time and attention to allow its strengths be isolated and to surface. Long term Gelb fans will appreciate his continued work rate, the extension of musical themes and hints at his past but overall it may be too slight and unprepossessing for the casual, passing listener".

"Americana founding father Howe Gelb long ago left dusty trails for a world of smokey, late-night bars. "Gathered" pulls back from his most recent brace of "Future Standards" jazz albums, and rather than imposing a concept on the tracks, he let's them playfully find their own paths. Meeting M Ward in Spain, the pair approach Leonard Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses Deep" as a sultry, late-night jam from a Cordoba rooftop; in Paris he coaxes a husky vocal from Jean-Luc Godard's 60s muse Anna Karina on "Not The End Of The World"; his 15-year-old daughter Talula croons her way through "Moon River" ... These impromptu sessions with happenstance acquaintances ironically constitute the most coherent album Gelb has produced in some years, up there with the best of his considerable canon".
