"On her second album, the country-pop singer remains a powerhouse talent who can sing the hell of out every middle-of-the-road style going ... But too much of Girl is stifling repertoire: suggesting all genres at once, excelling at none".

"For the most part, she's writing happy midtempo love songs about "The Feels." If you loved her scrappy attitude on Hero, the change can be hard to take - especially the bland homilies that clog the album's second half. But when Morris is on, she can come up with a winner like "Make Out With Me," where she sends a lusty voicemail while her flame is on the plane, knowing his phone is off, but begging him to come over as soon as he touches down. She might be on her best behavior on this LP, but the liveliest moments come when she gets out of line".

"Her hooks are striking, the production is vivid, and she sings with the casual assurance of a superstar. Where this approach falters is with the individual songs. By foregrounding her lyrical intent and offering no room for interpretation, Morris winds up with songs that feel less imaginative than their execution, a flaw that is by no means fatal but does mean that Girl plays on a smaller scale than intended".
