"Prior to Gohan Ga Dekitayo's release Akiko Yano had spent the previous year on tour with Yellow Magic Orchestra as both support act and keyboard player. Expanding the collaboration further, she took them on as her backing band on her next long player. The album marked her first foray into the world of electro-pop, though - in contrast to later releases - here it was subtly interwoven into a traditional singer/songwriter framework. [Ryuichi] Sakamoto's futuristic synths add a modern veneer to [Yano's] virtuosic piano-playing ... It's Yano's songwriting prowess that dominates though, with the haunting ballad "Coloured Water", the spine-tingling "High Time" and the prancing, Kate Bush-like melodies of "Hitotsudake" among the best of her career".
