"Much of the material here has appeared on various retrospectives and compilations over the years, although it has never been thematically collected together before ... We cannot complain that she opted for a different path, because then we wouldn't have had Unhalfbricking, Liege & Lief or Fotheringay. But 38 years after her death, it feels good finally to have something approaching the Sandy Denny acoustic album that never was".

"I've Always Kept A Unicorn: The Acoustic Sandy Denny is a compilation that will be welcomed by anyone who's ever thought, to quote Linda Thompson, "I so wish she had recorded a solo album". Bringing together some of the best material available from such a wide range of sources, it presents Sandy Denny's towering legacy in a way which is both respectful yet revealing".

"What we have here are glorious demos, live takes and media sessions which for ease of performance are all without amplification. Most have been aired before, chiefly as part of Island's huge box set. What they show is that touchstone, one-of-a-kind voice shorn of all frippery and adornment, songs which still lift you and beguile in their hazy, dreamlike, descending chords and oh-so-English glory ... Just superior in every sense. Wait for the sun to dip towards the horizon, slide this one into the system and close your eyes, such is perfection".
