"Hot on the stylish Cuban heels of Hamilton Leithauser's solo debut Black Hours comes his former Walkmen confrère Peter Matthew Bauer, overpowering the former's alpha-male cologne with a more peculiar, patchouli-tinged scent ... [The] clash between the grubbily sacred and the upliftingly profane gives Bauer's songs a distinctive charm: the title track sounds like a cross-legged Vampire Weekend, "Istanbul Field Recordings" provides a meditative space at the heart of the city, while the big-hearted blue-collar rock of "Scientology Airplane Conversations" conceals a murky core. It's an intriguing new incarnation for Bauer: Om and pop".
