"With her sophomore album, 2022's Linger Awhile, Samara Joy achieved an uncommon feat, winning the Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best New Artistt. While Joy is no stranger to accolades, having emerged to acclaim as the winner of the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Jazz Competition, her double success at the Grammys was a surprise for a jazz singer, especially one whose impressive style harks back to icons like (...) Vaughan, Betty Carter, and Dinah Washington ... Linger Awhile nicely showcases Joy's verdant tone and adept vocalese skills. Part of the album's charm is how straightforward it is ... Particularly notable is her vocalese take on trumpeter Fats Navarro's "Nostalgia" ... While Joy isn't the first jazz singer to sing a transcribed solo with lyrics, her artful attention to detail speaks to her maturity and deep feeling for the music - aspects redolent throughout Linger Awhile".

"Vocalist Samara Joy has risen quickly, making it to major label status by signing with Verve Records, for her debut, Linger Awhile. Prior to this Joy had just one eponymous release on the Whirlwind label. Verve, though is the same label that was home for the iconic female vocalists Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Betty Carter. While Joy would be humbled to attain anywhere near the status that they did, it certainly seems that the industry is already chomping at the bit as if they've found the 'next Ella.' Samara Joy belies her youthful age of just 22 years; her preference for standards and her unhurried, mature phrasing is that of an 'old soul'. Her voice has an irresistible balance of purity, emotion, and perfect pitch".

"Samara Joy is a charmer. She's got a voice that hits in the middle register well and she wields it knowingly, paying homage to the jazz songbook and owning the moment all the same. With this band, particularly guitarist Pasquale Grasso, Samara Joy has all the tools she needs to make the kind of Verve album that feels respectfully timeles".
