"The whole thing is a wonderful idea, celebrating the college's musical heritage while simultaneously renewing it, and the results are really rather lovely ... The CD's booklet is excellent, even finer than the others in this Signum St John's series because of the comprehensiveness of its notes ... A lovely disc, therefore; something that will appeal to anyone with an interest in the English musical tradition, whether you're linked with Cambridge or not".

"Recommended: This CD is released to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the Chapel on 12 May, 1869. By a happy chance this is also the choir's 100th recording ... To mark this plethora of anniversaries Andrew Nethsingha has assembled a discerningly-chosen programme of fifteen items, one of which represents each of the decades since the chapel was consecrated ... Throughout this programme the St John's College choir is on top form and I admire very much the way they can deliver a programme that mixes such a great variety of musical styles. Andrew Nethsingha has clearly prepared them expertly and I congratulate him not just for this but also for the perceptive and interesting programme he has chosen ... It would be hard to imagine a finer celebration of the 150th anniversary of St John's College Chapel".

"Composed for the consecration of Linz Cathedral's Votive Chapel 150 years ago, Bruckner's Locus Iste appropriately headlines a disc commemorating another ecclesiastical dedication of that year: the new chapel of St John's College, Cambridge. And Andrew Nethsingha adroitly programmes one work from each of the succeeding decades ... The overarching tone is set by the opening work as William Harris's Faire is the Heaven draws a sonorous curtain of richest velvet ... A glint of sunlight, inspired and inspiring".

"Editor's choice: It's when the pedal goes down (literally and metaphorically) that this disc really soars, startling the ear into ecstasy with the sudden release of Rachmaninov's Cherubic Hymn, the 'bright Seraphim' of Parry's Blest pair of sirens and the 'triumphant shout' of Finzi's God is gone up ... Hopefully it's a fanfare that will continue to sound for another 150 years".
