Det har været et stort år for urban-genren med forrygende udgivelser fra blandt andre Kaytranda, Anderson.Paak, Beyoncé og lillesøster Solange. Jojo er ikke helt i den kaliber, men "Mad Love" er stadig et solidt r&b-album, med Jojos rå vokal og musikalsk vekslen mellem soul- og hip hop-indflydelse. Trods sine blot 25 år debuterede Jojo allerede tilbage i 2004 og gik nr. 1 i Amerika med singlen "Leave (Get out)", men grundet kontraktproblemer er dette hendes første reelle album i 10 år.

"Still only 25, JoJo's career was stalled by a contract that resulted in a lawsuit, meaning Mad Love is her first proper album in 10 years ... While there are flashes of brilliance (...) too many songs feel dated or unable to properly showcase JoJo's raw vocal ".

The abrupt genre shifts are jarring at turns, but paradoxically it's this malleability that should be key to JoJo's continued success. Ultimately, though, Mad Love. sounds like an album that JoJo needed to make, and one that her fans were waiting for".
