"She emphasizes the guitar parts to the neglect of every other element. And yet, Mayfield remains an incisive lyricist with a sharp humor that gets underplayed by her deadpan delivery. "I could kill her with the power in my mind, but I'm a good humanitarian," she sings on "Oblivious," dismembering that unwieldy word at the joints as she shoots daggers at the other female corner in a love triangle. On closer "Seein * Starz", she tells a man, "You've got a stranglehold on my heart." Mayfield has insisted for years that love is treacherous and obliterating, and on Make My Head Sing... her guitar enacts that romantic violence. It provides an intriguing counterpart to her vocals, turning her inner monologues into something like an argument".

"Ud er gået den akustiske folk, og ind er kommet en lettere rastløs omgang sitrende rock, der tager sig allerstærkest ud på den flænsende åbner Oblivious, de trods alt behageligt bølgende I Wanna Love You og Standing In The Sun, der dog i dén grad samtidig har noget på spil, den ubønhørligt piskende Do I Have The Time og den desillusionerede Anything You Want".
