"The set as a whole is nicely varied, though, and is clearly governed by a unified musical vision: a persuasive synthesis of contemporary US and South African sounds. As it fades out over Makhathini's own voice on the brief final track you are left feeling he's telling us he has still more to say. Overall, it's a richly realised project that should bring him the larger international audience he deserves".

"The visionary South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini makes his Blue Note Records debut, Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds, an expansive album anchored by Makhathini's expressive, McCoy Tyner inspired piano in modal style in which lyrical, plaintive horns mingle with percussion, vocal shouts and urgent lyrics. He's the first South African artist to ever sign with the legendary label".

"Modes Of Communication avoids "the capitalist framework associated most readily with 'jazz' music," the liner notes exert. The idea can be debated, but its thrust is correct: This is music of the spirit, released at a time when it's most critically needed".
