"By my reckoning Capriccio has produced four Kapustin discs ... I've heard them all and they have been uniformly excellent, lively and brilliantly conceived absorptions of jazz in various guises ... Now it's time for three works from adjacent decades, the 1986 Sinfonietta for piano four-hands, the Piano Concerto No.5 from 1993 and finally 2002's Concerto for two pianos ... Kapustin music is just the thing for jazz-enriched and big band panache. Dupree et al have it just right here. No wonder the pianist is smiling on the cover picture; he deserves to, as well".

"Kapustin's brilliant yet anything-but-improvised jazz compositions represented for him a retreat into an idealised alternative world. His Fifth Piano Concerto, though written in 1993, sounds as if Gershwin might have written it in the 1930s as a sequel to his own Concerto. This is not the first recording [of Concerto No. 5], though the only other version - performed by Masahiro Kawakami (on Exton) - is hard to purchase outside Japan. In any case, this new recording displaces that version, played as it is with more idiomatic zest both by the soloist Frank Dupree and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dominik Beykirch".

"Editor's choice: The astonishing Frank Dupree here continues his Kapustin odyssey with the fifth of the composer's six piano concertos, and two works for two pianists ... The piano-writing resembles a notated jazz-improvisation by Oscar Peterson. As a poor-to-average sight-reader, I am bewildered at the skill it must take to read, absorb and conquer Kapustin's dizzying flights and constantly changing metre ... For Dupree, it's a jog in the park. The fluency and rhythmic élan on display throughout this disc are the kind that make you smile and shake your head in disbelief".
