"'Protect Your Light' is focused and fierce; it is, in places, measurably different as the band (...) learned to use the studio as another musical instrument, employing its possibilities for space, textures, dynamics, overdubbing, and intricate mixing ... Fans of IE will embrace the changes: Protect Your Light expands the group's already abundant gifts. Anyone - fan or newcomer - open to avant jazz and spoken word will register delight, surprise, and possibly awe at the creativity and inspiration on the album".

"The free jazz collective takes a more patient and self-reflective approach to politics on their new album ... 'Protect Your Light' represents a departure from [their usual] free-flowing process. Recording across several days, the ensemble leaned into the tools of the studio, reexamining material and layering overdubs with help from multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily. The list of production credits dwarfs the lyrics sheet; each member wields multiple instruments, producing an album that sounds bigger than the five-piece group that created it. Cymbals crash, saxophones scream, horns swirl, and basslines walk confidently before tumbling down the stairs. But the chaos is controlled. The songs are relatively concise for Irreversible Entanglements, with the longest one clocking in at seven and a half minutes".

"Irreversible Entanglements [har] skabt en forfriskende sammenstøbning af en plade, der kaster excentrisk politisk poesi-freejazz i hovedet på lytteren ... de [slipper] rigtig godt afsted med Protect Your Light (...) Albummet er nemlig en kreativ sammenstøbning med eksplosivitet og poetisk vildskab, der trækker tråde til jazzlegendernes ivrige lyst til at udfordre status quo inden for jazzmusikken".
