"Say This to Say That [is] one of Trombone Shorty's most well-rounded sets to date. Gone is the rushed expectation that served as a fatal flaw for his last few records and in is a fuller sense of self, a confidence bred by sheer patience that allows everyone involved to feel the security of an idea completely realized. The Shaadiq/Andrews tandem is one of unlimited potential and, at least in this case, exciting success".

"Shorty's improvising is right out of the NOLA jazz heritage even though it occurs inside a modern funk number. Ultimately, with all of its confidence, production polish, and sophistication, this is the album that should break Trombone Shorty to a much wider, more diverse audience".

"Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews' third album for Verve, co-produced by chart-topping r&b veteran Raphael Saadiq, brings a new honesty to the New Orleans native's lyrics and a more cogent approach to his unique funk-r&b-rock paradigm. The result is a more personal album than his earlier bravado-heavy Verve releases".
