"With a range of source material running from Heart and Soul to Mali to the Balkans to East Asia, the resulting fusions are never less than interesting and are often marvelous. Sample the much-recorded St. James Infirmary Blues in its unique realization here with accordionist Michael Ward Bergeman (one of the guest Silk Roaders), Chinese yangqin player Reylon Yount, and the wonderful blues-country vocalist Rhiannon Giddens, a border crosser herself. The album gives insights into the histories of the Silk Road players, and indeed into the musical and personal depth that has made this ensemble one for the ages, and its leader a true musical exemplar of our time".

"With the assortment of guest artists on the roster for Sing Me Home, it's tempting to dismiss the album at first glance as an all-star vanity project for Yo-Yo Ma, but nothing could be further from the truth ... Sing Me Home may have the feel of a history lesson, but it's a lesson by your cool professor who insists on making learning loose, fun, and infectious".

"Souverän gestaltet Yo-Yo Ma die Programme - diesmal als ... Klangreise von Westen nach Osten und zurück. Über vierzig Musiker bilden den Stamm des Ensembles. Stets besteht die Gefahr der Gleichmacherei im Umgang mit ethnischer Musik, Traditional Folks, Volksmusik ... Was das Silk Road Ensemble vor einer romantisierenden Angleichung rettet, ist die exquisite Schar der Musiker".

"It was seeing the video of the recording of the track in which Rhiannon Giddens sings St James Infirmary Blues that did it for me. An assemblage of top musicians gathered from across the world, giving their all with evident intensity, commitment and delight ... [The album's] panoply of styles and material, with a core group of more than 20 musicians joined by even more guests taking the lead in individual tracks might be perceived at first glance as a big, arty, overkill project, but that image of very fine musicians genuinely and luminously collaborating stays with me; it's brilliantly arranged and performed and it has the surprise and variety that engages me".
