"Can you really come from deepest Essex and pull off tropical pop? Judging by the views and streams Anne-Marie has amassed so far, both for collaborations (Rudimental, Clean Bandit and, more lately, Marshmello) and her own tracks, the conclusion would have to be yes, and not to get our thongs in a twist about cultural appropriation".

"Flavours of tropical house and reggaeton lend some warmth, but combined with the fact she's pinched her smokey, slightly croaky vocal style from Rihanna, they result in some cold sweat-inducing cultural appropriation too (her pronunciation of "two shots fired" on Alarm is, well, alarming)".

"Beyond her lyrics, though, 'Speak Your Mind' fails to leave much of an impression musically. At its best, the album is a selection of polished and inoffensive pop songs, but at its worst, it's forgettable. `Heavy' feels weightless and anonymous, and the album's opener 'Cry' is a jumble of scattered beats and well-intentioned hooks, none of which quite land the killer blow. When Anne-Marie incorporates her dubstep influences on 'Bad Girlfriend' (she's a big fan of Enter Shikari), she's at her most intriguing, but these moments are frustratingly few and far between".
