"Beethoven's disruptive humour is something that I think Jansons recognises, but doesn't achieve ... What he likes best, to judge from results, is heroic climaxes and dramatic punctuation. The six specially commisioned pieces ... are fairly aggresively modern ... I didn't much enjoy any of them ... If you want vigorous conducting, immaculate but lean playing, and unfailingly sprightly tempos in Beethoven, this set is for you".

"Jansons' Beethoven ist jung, weil er den Diskurs schärft und sich stets wandelt. Hier wird nichts konserviert, sondern fürwahr gelebt".

"Vurdering: Gramophone choice - Vurdering: Recording of the month" - "This is an exceptional realisation of Beethoven's nine symphonies, one of those rare occasions when one is left with a feeling of having been in the presence of the thing itself. The key to the cycle's success is the quality of the musicianship ... The dramatic and expressive elements are derived from within ... I have yet to tire from these DVDs ... Watching orchestral playing of this level of skill and concentration is alway a joy".

"Vurdering: IRR outstanding" - "This touchstone set compellingly taps Beethoven's life force to propel his symphonic works into our new century with renewed energy and relevance ... Composer, conductor and performers all touched by genius: it deosn't get much better".
