"John Paul White's The Hurting Kind has been advanced as a return to Nashville's "countrypolitain" sound of the 1960s. He enlisted the aid of Country Hall of Fame heroes Bill Anderson and Bobby Braddock as co-writers on three cuts, and his and Ben Tanner's production style for the album certainly reflects that influence. But White is no stranger to countrypolitain: On his 2016 offering Beulah, he delivered "I've Been Over This Before," a classically wrought, languid, honky tonk shuffle guided by an Owen Bradley-esque blueprint mix ... The Hurting Kind stands head and shoulders above Beulah for its mature vision, powerful focus, and poetic songwriting and production. It is White's finest moment thus far".

"Think back to the sound of Roy Orbison and the writers of those classic country tunes - Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Whisperin' Bill Anderson and Bobby Braddock. They're the ones that John Paul White looked to for inspiration for his third solo album, The Hurting Kind, seeking out Anderson and Braddock, specifically ... White has already won four Grammy Awards for his work with the now disbanded Civil Wars. He's a partner in this label, Single Lock Records based in Florence, AL. His smooth, deep voice is captivating, especially with this batch of melodic songs. This recording will deservedly draw plenty of attention".

"Third solo set from the Civil Wars veteran ... The album is saturated with heartbreak and bad decisions, perfectly decked in country-politan arrangements".
