"Nelson is a natural showman, and his band plays with similar spirit-there isn't a moment on Turn Off the News where they seem to be faking their enthusiasm for this material. There's a fine line between escapist and naïve, though, and Nelson and company aren't afraid to toe it. The extent to which listeners enjoy this record depends on how much they buy into the fantasy of Nelson and his famous pals clinking Coronas around the pool while the rest of the world goes to hell. If it feels a little hollow, well, that's by design".

"If it's difficult to categorize the music of Lukas Nelson and his band, well, that runs in the family. After all, dad Willie has never been predictable and Lukas has been involved in so many projects that pinning him down can be a slippery feat ... These diverse songs find their balance not just with a subtle mix of rootsy country, folk, pop, soul and Americana, but in Nelson's homespun vocals inviting you to unplug and, well, do what the disc's title suggests".

"Unlike a lot of Americana bands, Nelson and co. have omnivorous tastes and a sense of humor, a combination that results in slow-grooving R&B numbers, sun-kissed pop, rangy rockers, and a persistent good vibe. In troubled times, the band have managed to deliver an album filled with optimism, and that's a remarkable feat".
