"The Concerto ... is a rich, indulgent mix, typical of Henze's music of this period, and not everything hangs together. But that isn't the point. In his music of the late 1960s and early 70s Henze was always trying out ideas, testing himself ... Il Vitaliano Raddoppiato takes Vitali's famous chaconne as the starting point for a half-hour journey ... Sometimes acerbic, sometimes achingly beautiful, in many ways it's the epitome of so much of Henze's music".

"Henze ... wrote three violin concertos, of which this second, written in 1971, is the most experimental. It is really a music theatre work ... The soloist is supposed to enter after the orchestra has started playing, dressed as Baron Munchausen. The conductor repeatedly stops him from playing and there is a moment when the soloist grabs the baton ... Add to this that, at intervals, there is a speaker who delivers remarks ... However, apart from the visual elements, the work is given the best possible chance in this recording ... and Naxos and all concerned should take a bow ... I enjoyed the coupling more ... If you feel you should catch up with Henze's violin concertos then you can do so and Il Vitalino raddoppiato will be your reward".

"Where some composers wear polystylism as a cloak - or mask - with Henze it comes from within a natural response to the musical challenges encountered. Through it all, Skaerved weaves his haunting presence as primus inter pares in what can be heard as expanded chamber music. A superb disc ... Highly recommended".
