"Drawing on the clave rhythmic theory underpinning Afrobeat, Cuban jazz and salsa, the multi-instrumentalist duo of Marcos Garcia (long-time staple of Brooklyn collective Antibalas) and Geoff Mann (son of world music pioneer Herbie) bravely balance leaden Black Sabbath-like riffs with flighty Fela Kuti beats, driven to almost rhythmic overload via extreme conga action. If bludgeoning standouts "Animal Noises", "Summon Fire" and "Hell" sound like enhanced takes from some lost African psych-rock compilation, HLM offset the filthy turbo riffage with moody atmospherics and surprise left-turns".
