"The album version [of her first theatre show, Wind Resistance] steps softly in the lightest arrangements on the likes of the traditional Lark in the Clear Air, but its blend of historical drama, ballad ghosts and philosophical memoir (geese, Polwart muses on Labouring and Resting, are "sky-born socialists") is compelling, made as intimate as if it were in your own skull by Polwart's warm, wise, attention-commanding voice".

"The sound design throughout, by composer Pippa Murphy, is impressive and immersive too, particularly in its use of electronic drones, marimbas and sansulas. The tale's central tragedy is obvious early on, but the account of childbirth on this record is incredibly vivid and sad, pulling no punches. This record is an epic, emotional endeavour, and a stunning one, too".

"A Pocket Of Wind Resistance isn't so much a collection of songs, it's theatre for the ears, but it surpasses radio drama. All the tension, the joy, the craft that's part of the immersive experience of going to the theatre is achieved without the visual elements. Karine Polwart's music and poetry, with Pippa Murphy's exquisite settings, haven't replicated the theatre production; it has brought Wind Resistance to a wider audience, furnished it with portability. Beautiful, potent, and engaging; A Pocket of Wind Resistance gives Karine Polwart's enthralling theatrical début a satisfying permanence".

"It's already up there in the frame for a 2018 BBC Folk Award and deservedly so. Polwart's imaginative songwriting, firm ideals and willingness to explore new ideas - not to mention one of the finest voices in the kingdom - has long established her as among our music's mightiest figures".
