"Touring around Europe and the US heavily in recent months, the Garifuna gang from Belize sound much more traditionally folkloric on stage. This album, whose title translates as 'One,' captures their scintillating spread within another framework ... It's extremely rewarding to hear this alternative palette, as both the live and recorded aspects of the Collective sound are equally compelling. The shimmering heat-haze of the lead guitar lends a retro-reverbed 60s or 70s quality, as each song's multiple elements are locked into choppy grooves. There's a pulpy bass load, handclaps, shakers, vocal choruses and licking guitar mini-solos. Most numbers are tightly organised, and with multiple hooks. There are little details like the cock-crowing refrain during 'Wiya Waist' that nudge towards a Jamaican dancehall vocal feel, with the following 'Hamala' opting for a slower reggae lope with a surfing guitar solo flotation. Garifuna folk is being made accessible without ditching its innate rustic qualities, and is now bumping lightly onto a heavier dance floor".
