"Albala may be an album influenced by Mali's troubles, offering a deeper insight into the country's troubles in the process. Yet with Touré's focus on injustice, inequality and the duplicity of faith, it's an album that should resonate with everyone, regardless of culture or nation - and this is unifying in itself. An engaging and rather captivating record".

"The songs are backed by simple, slinky and insistent acoustic and electric guitar riffs matched against more elaborate flurries of guitar, n'goni or sokou violin, and an occasional wash of guitar and keyboard effects from Hugo Race, who once played with Nick Cave".

"The dire situation which persists in northern Mali (...) gives the record both its name - "Albala" mening something akin to "danger" in Songhai - and also its sound ... This is a record full of passion, eloquence and incredible music. Touré's voice soars throughout, adding energy and depth. Perhaps it's the title track which is most poignant however. Here Samba's voice, along with the backing vocals and choir, are absent. Left behind is a sublime instrumental arrangement which, though peaceful, perhaps expresses the idea that, faced with the horrors of armed conflict, words ultimately fail us".
