"On the UK trio's first LP for Kill Rock Stars, the band fleshes out its riot-grrrl-meets-girl-group sound with electronics and strings while singing of strength and vulnerability ... Back Home provides heart-rending moments alongside its punk grit, expanding on Big Joanie's sound without loosening their bite".

"Big Joanie have become slow-burning breakout stars since 2018's Sistahs, and their second album is sure to cement their reputations as iconoclasts in both the traditional punk sense, as well as in their approach/rejection of genre boundaries ... The stylistic leaps from song to song would be unwieldy in lesser hands, but Big Joanie have such a clear, cohesive vision that going from trance to grunge seems to make sense ... One of the most exciting albums to come out this year, regardless of genre".

"Big Joanie indentify as black feminist punks, their three members (...) using the group as a safe space to explore issues surrounding race, gender and injustice through lo-fi art pop that builds on such alt-rock touchstones as Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and Hüsker Dü ... Their 2018 debut 'Sistahs' captured their fervid live sound. This second is more sophisticated; distorted guitars still feedback and synths jar, but there is also mellotron, violin and Omnichord bringing subtlety and depth".
