"Marry Waterson, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann combine to revivify a rather gloomy collection of ancient folk music".

"There are plenty of earworms in here - at least three you won't shake off easily - but that makes perfect sense when you're reinventing the pop music of earlier times. Folk? Pop? Who cares? When it's this good it can stand by itself".

"Blackletter Garland is highly impressive in many ways. It is both a wonderful collection of individual folk songs by three of our finest performers and an example of what can be achieved when those people share their skills. As such, it is more than the sum of its parts. It's tempting to say that this is a blueprint for how folk music should be made, but prescriptive statements like that are narrow and limiting, and Blackletter Garland is the opposite of that. It shows many possible futures of folk music, all of them varied and vibrant".

"Fascinating collaboration from three of UK folk's leading lights (...), [digging] deep into British folklore, reanimating the victims, villains, lovers and fighters of the Bodleian Library's collection of penny broadside ballad sheets".
