"Versatility is second nature to Lascelle "Lascelles" Gordon. A percussive presence in Brand New Heavies, Campag Velocet and Heliocentric World, VBF feels much more personal and discreet - an atmospheric meld of fragments, field recordings and spiritual jazz. As with 2017's debut 'Blackism', vivid off-kilter contrasts abound, as probing horns, shimmering keys and lysergic synths rub shoulders during "Acting For Liberation"'s loping grooves. While there's hints of 'Blue Lines'-era Massive Attack ("The Glory") and Nico's deep harmonium drones ("Only In A Dream"), a desolate take on New Life Trio's 1980 obscurity "Empty Streets", soulfully voiced by Ebony Rose, haunts amid the global Covid-19 lockdown. Sequenced with a maverick's sense of adventure, it's easy to get swept into its multi-dimensional drift".

"[This] spiritual jazz collective led by ex-Brand New Heavy Lascelles Gordon deeply impress with their second album ... It consists of atmospheric soundscapes driven by mesmerising bass lines and sprinkled with soulful vocals, darting flutes and bluesy horns. The cinematic groove "Acting For Liberation" is the killer cut".
