Der Kaiser von Atlantis

Beskrivelse

Summary: Viktor Ullmann's one-act chamber opera was written in the Theresienstadt camp and did not see its premiere until December 16, 1975 in Amsterdam, since the performance had been banned after its dress rehearsal in 1944. The concert performance of the version by Henning Brauel and Andreas Krause (Schott), which took place on October 10, 2021 at the Prinzregententheater in Munich, was recorded for this CD.

"This is the version of Viktor Ullmann's opera, recorded live in October, 2021 in Munich, that features an expanded instrumental score ... The singers here are all excellent, and the orchestra, members of the Munich Radio Orchestra, is equally, expectedly fine ... Also of note: this recording comes without a libretto ... instead giving summaries of the texts throughout each scene ... There are a few other options available for those who want to explore other recorded performances of Der Kaiser von Atlantis, but the two I've mentioned here are the best, and together provide the most useful comparison of what might be described as a more "historically accurate" version and a more "modern" rendition, both very fine and satisfying performances, and legitimate in their own right. While either one will serve most listeners very well, I recommend both".

"There can surely be little doubt or argument about the reasons why we all need to experience Victor Ullman's Der Kaiser von Atlantis. Scheduled for a première in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, the 'spiel' was designed as a satirical opera on the horrors of the Nazi state ... 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis' is revealed as a work of true humanity, despite the horror of the processes that produced it. The moments of satire are not overlooked ... This release will, I fear, be best appreciated either by those already familiar with the work and wishing to experience a different and interesting approach to its performance, or those whose German is fluent enough to engage with the sung text without having it in print (and the diction of the singers is certainly clear)".

"Viktor Ullmann's 1943 opera 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis' was composed in Theresienstadt ... The one-act, four-scene work is part parody, part wishful thinking ... Ullmann passed on the score to another prisoner for safe-keeping ... Members of the Munich Radio Orchestra are joined by a stellar cast; Johannes Chum contributes a Weill-inspired Harlequin; Tareq Nazim a dramatic Death. Lars Woldt is an ominous Loudspeaker ('hallo, hallo')".

"Recorded live in Munich in front of a very quiet audience in October last year, Patrick Hahn's vision of Der Kaiser is more lyrical than Lothar Zagrosek's pioneering interpretation, part of Decca's groundbreaking Entartete Musik series ... Hahn brings out the satirical elements ... in a reading of remarkable lucidity, highlighting deftly the various allusions . to popular songs ... The playing of the Munich Radio Orchestra is on the mark throughout ... The cast are uniformly strong".
