"Nascent brilliance from Dorset's star-in-waiting; with unseen photographs ... "Dress" or "Joe" might not have the album's brutal thunder, but they still charge and shift the atmosphere around them thanks to the supernatural self-possession of Harvey's young voice (almost Natalie Merchant-like on a spare, lilting "Happy And Bleeding"). There's an odd lightness to a tape-hiss version of "Sheela-Na-Gig", yet all the dynamic architecture is in place; "Oh My Lover" and "Joe" show just how much weight these songs were capable of bearing in their final form. Embryonic greatness, maybe, but still great".
