"McFerrin pieced Early Riser together from scraps of demos he'd left unfinished. In some cases, such as "4am" and "Blind Aesthetics," they remain short bits of ideas. The album title gives a good indication of its drowsy feel, one familiar from other Brainfeeder records such as Teebs' recent E S T A R A or more chilled moments from label boss Flying Lotus. Some tracks slowly reveal themselves like dawn spreading across the skyline".

"On Early Riser McFerrin often builds towards an unforseen point without reaching a clear resolution, but this approach occasionally yields positive results. "Postpartum" gradually swells, picking up pieces along the way like a musical Katamari; it never quite achieves liftoff, but the slow, exaggerated stretch is pleasing regardless ... That moment of release finally arrives on the album-closing "PLS DNT LISTEN", a necessary jolt of adrenaline on an album that otherwise takes its time thawing out. At its conclusion, Early Riser's title proves a misnomer-this is an album built for slow weekend mornings spent in bed with a loved one more than brisk, early-morning runs".

"Wonderful debut album from the son of Bobby ... An achingly beautiful collection of post-Dilla cut-and-paste tracks, underscored by the gossamer touch of vintage Casios. The album radiates a universal warmth ... A special album that pulls you deep into its alternative universe"".
