"Like Molina's classic albums, Eight Gates documents songs that are still in the process of becoming, a snapshot of their neverending journey toward a nonexistent final form. But given the nature of the release, it's unclear what is an artistic effect and what is a more literal case of unfinished work ... It's not unreasonable to wonder whether he considered it a whole and successful body of work, or whether he wanted people to hear it at all. Still, regardless of his or his label's intentions, it's possible to hear Eight Gates as a fitting tribute. In its blank spaces, it reflects the spectral quality of his greatest music, albeit sometimes for different reasons".

"Molina saw his songs as "living animals", parts of himself that carry his message. At the start of album track `She Says', he muses that you can make "the perfect take... just as long as the person singing is still alive". It's a heartbreaking moment, and yet these songs, Molina's living animals, continue to make their way through the world, ensuring that their creator's legacy lives on".

"The power of Molina's art has never been in doubt, and this The Eight Gates offers further evidence for his genius. But it also offers a small glimpse of the bare bones, the craft and hard work that lies behind the artistry and heartbreak. And for that reason, it is an important document as well as a beautiful one".
