"From the dark opening to the sunlit blazes on the mountaintop, Nelsons's approach to Strauss's Alpine Symphony is sharply defined, the textures malleable yet tightly controlled and the music animated with passion. The CBSO plays gloriously both in the symphony and in the sultriness and wild excess of Salome's Dance of the Seven Veils".

"Jurowski creates a dark, powerfully expectant swirl of sound ... Adding to the atmosphere is the antiphonal brass - superblypitched and caught ... Full-fat Strauss, played, directed and recorded with aplomb; simply glorious".

"Recording of the month: With so many superlative and recommendable recordings already in the field ... I think this would now be my prime recommendation to anyone new to the work, simply because of its combination of superb sound, the technical excellence of execution by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the sheer electricity of this performance under Jansons's direction ... "Tod und Verklärung" is likewise executed in masterly fashion, perfectly paced and magnificently played".

"At the Philharmonie, Munich, Jansons demonstrates masterly control of his massive orchestral forces securing an awe-inspiring performance unwavering in its passionate intensity and sheer grandeur ... A highly desirable album of Richard Strauss tone poems performed by an orchestra who knows his music so well".

Hun kæler for hver eneste detalje".

"An entire programme of giant symphoni-operatic Strauss might be too much of a good thing, but these three works ... make a compelling whole ... Jurowski's Alpine Symphony ideally paced and beautifully balanced ... There are so many good recordings of it, but this is up there among the best. And I know no more bewitching or exciting performance of Salome's Dance, either".

"[Jurowski] is certainly a reliable guide [in the Alpensinfonie]: no-nonsense, level-headed, occasionally almost stoic. There are many fine things that come as a result, with a remarkable level of detail to be heard in Strauss's multi-stranded score - executed with remarkable accuracy by the orchestra ... Jurowski knows the score [Frau ohne Schatten] well (he's conducted it several times in the theatre) and he draws outstanding playing from the orchestra".

"Conceives the piece as a symphonic abstraction, its descriptive qualities merely the starting-point for an ascent then descent whose 'rise and fall' is of an altogether more elemental cast ... highly persuasive in its inexorable progress from suave languor to febrile abandon ... an Alpine Symphony that reaffirms the chemistry of the Nelsons/CBSO partnership".

"The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra bring a burnished, polished sound to every strand of Strauss's kaleidoscopic score [Alpensinfonie], and BR-Klassik's engineering is a marvel of presence, clarity and detail ... Tod und Verklärung is every bit as well played and recorded, and the work has rarely sounded better".
