"Protomartyr er blevet ældre og mere reflekterende på Formal Growth in the Desert. Slutresultatet er en lidt fladere fornemmelse, end man tidligere har været vant til ... Protomartyr er på nippet til at begå den største dødssynd, et band kan begå; nemlig at blive ligegyldige. Heldigvis redder de fortsat mange point hjem på at lyde som ingen andre postpunkorkestre".

"The Detroit post-punks expand their sound with their sixth record, manifesting growth from barren places ... Deserts are barren lands possessing hostile conditions that humans can't survive in. But Protomartyr are at home here: growing, expanding and putting up a mirror to humanity's driest and bleakest parts, inviting their listeners to reflect on it all".

"Formal Growth in the Desert finds them no more optimistic than usual but embracing the reality that sometimes there's nowhere to go but forward ... The melodies are as straightforward and muscular as ever, with more graceful structures, yet executed with the precision and dynamic that make their music so satisfying ... Protomartyr would almost certainly have sounded like nay-sayers even in America's salad days, but in 2023 Formal Growth in the Desert plays like another State of the Union address from this band of intelligent malcontents, and what they have to say is strikingly effective as editorial commentary and as music".

"Protomartyr swapped Detroit for Texas's Sonic Ranch to record their sixth album, and the cathartic desolation of the Tex-Mex border seeps into the music ... Joe Casey draws on personal trauma in this occasionally harrowing listen, with tracks like "Elimination Dances", "The Author" and "3800 Tigers" finding a balance between The Clash, Mission of Burma and Slint, combining echoey space with angular guitars and Casey's edge-of-oblivion vocals".
