"Steve Earle continues to repay the songwriters who meant the most to him by bringing their music to fresh ears. A few years ago, he did a tribute album in honor of Townes Van Zandt. This time around it's Guy Clark, who passed away in 2016, who gets the spotlight courtesy of Earle and his longtime backing band, the Dukes. It's no surprise to find that Guy is accomplished, spirited, and utterly complimentary to Clark's unique songwriting gifts ... What Steve Earle and the Dukes make clear with Guy is that these songs are old friends as well, somehow truer and purer today than when they were written by one of the masters".

"The album closes with 1988's "Old Friends," the one time that a performance clarifies its status as homage. Earle brings in a number of actual old friends to sing: Walker, Emmylou Harris, Terry Allen, Jo Harvey Allen, Rodney Crowell. Harris and Crowell sang on the original, adding both continuity and heartbreak to the rendition. It ends the disc on a touch of sentimentality, but not inappropriately. The disc itself stands as a tribute to Earle's relationship to Clark and to Clark's gifted songwriting. The final cuts just sums all of that up as it says goodbye".

"On his 19th album, Earle pays tribute to late great Guy Clark ... Where Townes [Van Zandt] was solo, Guy is a band album. As well as the Dukes - excellent fiddle and steel ... Recorded in a cople of days at the House of Blues in Nashville, there's a great live feel, especially on the more uptempo cuts".
