"An outlier on the outlaw country scene of the 1970s, Terry Allen's Juarez is a bawdy song cycle that alludes to the fall of the Aztec Empire, Jesus, and motel sex. It retains its kick 40 years on".

"Does this Tex-Mex concept album deserve its cult reputation? - Allen's protagonists couldn't be more clichéd but the way he treats them couldn't be less. His delicate barroom piano lines mingle with the guitars of Peter Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) and Greg Douglas (Hot Tuna) to form a unique musical backdrop - slide, mandolin and Tejano guitar creating an atmosphere where Randy Newman's Good Old Boys (specifically the Johnny Cutler's Birthday piano demos) meets Dylan's Desire, with Cormac McCarthy buying shots".
