"The weird, at times ghoulish, production by director Krzysztof Warlikowski ... fails to draw the viewer in ... Nevertheless, this is a DVD that scores highly in terms of musical performance, with a muscular reading of the score from conductor Philippe Jordan, a ravishingly sung, naturalistically acted Macduff from Jonathan Tetelman, and two excellent principals. The resonant-voiced Vladislav Sulimsky, tormented by small children in grotesque masks, convinces as a man losing his mind. Asmik Grigorian has a less weighty voice than we might expect for Lady Macbeth, but is formidably compelling".
