"It's possible these are re-imaginings of the Residents' own songs, culled from pre-Residents demos, which have been resurrected and re-done in The Residents' trademarked mysterious and oddball fashion. Either way, these tracks are as deliriously delightful as they are demented and cacophonous, and sound like a mashup of Tom Waits' swampy blues and Nick Cave murder ballads. An acquired taste for sure but ultimately scrumptiously delicious!".

"The Residents are rarely a band one looks to for an evening's background filler, but the dedication to their mission, however obscure that might at times be, is overwhelming. and through it all they have both charted the way and made room for a host of artists to follow. If, after so long, it takes a conceptual prank like this to produce one album of arresting, upsetting, irritating and intermittently wonderful pieces and another album of adept and thoroughly enjoyable songs designed to be taken at face value, then who can begrudge them that".

"With Metal, Meat & Bone the Residents first and foremost demonstrate their unique way of storytelling and a real feel for the blues one might not have expected from the band. The Dyin' Dog demos disc is, perhaps against the odds, a great modern blues outing. Though the Residents are no doubt pulling the wool over our eyes again, it is done with such quality and attention to detail that it doesn't really matter that we're being played a bit. Definitely fresh meat, straight off the bone".
